Gen Z is all about TikTok references and trendy slang, while millennials are known for their love of Buzzfeed and ‘90s nostalgia. But have you ever wondered how much you actually relate to your generation—whether you’re a millennial or you’re born in Gen Z?
You’re not the only one. At the end of the day, you’re more than your birth year (Gen Z: 1997-2012 and millennial: 1981-1996). You might find that your true “generation” isn’t actually the one you were born into. To find out whether you’re Gen Z, millennial, or a “cusper” at heart, click “Start Quiz” now.

Generation 101: Generation Y and Generation Z
Millennials and Gen Zers get mixed up, grouped together, and then pitted against each other a lot. But it doesn’t have to be that way! A “generation” is a group of people who were born during the same 15-20 year span. We study generations to better understand their habits, opinions, and attitudes. Millennials and Gen Zers are becoming the largest populations on the planet now, so let’s get to know each other better!
What exactly is a millennial? And where does the name come from? A millennial is someone who was born between 1981 and 1996. This means that the oldest millennials are in their 40s, and even the youngest millennials are out of college and working. Some famous millennials include Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, Aaron Rodgers, and Taylor Swift. This generation is also known as Generation Y. They’re called millennials because the oldest of them graduated high school right around 2000.
What are millennials known for? Millennials entered adulthood anytime between 9/11 and the 2008 recession. They have a lower net worth than Gen X, which is the generation born between 1965 and 1980. However, millennials are also more educated than previous generations —especially among women — and work really hard at their jobs. Millennials are less likely to ask for a vacation or for time off than older generations.
What else are they doing differently? Millennials tend to be more deliberate with their family lives and relationships. They get married later, usually in their late 20s. They move in with a romantic partner at a younger age, and they wait longer to have children — if they have them at all.
What defines Gen Z? Someone who belongs to Generation Z was born between 1997 and about 2010. Gen Zers are mostly digital natives, meaning that they have little or no memory of the world without smartphones. They’re probably going to be very influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and are also on track to become the most educated generation yet.
How does Gen Z think politically? Gen Zers tend to have similar political views to millennials. Both generations are about equally likely to say that Black people are treated less fairly than white people in the U.S., and that the planet is warming due to human activity. The youngest Gen Zers are only about 5 years away from turning 18, so the entire generation will be voting soon. And of course, a lot of Gen Z is voting already!
