The Barbie Characters: Who Are They?

The groundbreaking 2023 film Barbie is full of lovable and goofy characters. From the Stereotypical Barbie we all know and love to lesser-known figures like Allan (whose toy was discontinued in 1966), the movie is jam-packed with Barbie and Mattel history. But who are these characters, and why are they important? Take a look at this breakdown of the characters featured in this quiz:

  • Barbie, or Stereotypical Barbie, is the doll everyone knows and loves. Portrayed by Margot Robbie in the movie, this character can do anything (even stop the patriarchy). She’s kind, compassionate, friendly, smart, and beautiful—she’s the whole package!
  • Ken is Barbie’s right-hand man. In the 2023 movie, Ken (portrayed by Ryan Gosling) explores who he is when he’s not with Barbie. This character is like a loveable puppy—full of energy and incredibly friendly.
  • Allan is Ken’s best guy friend. Unlike other variants of Ken in Barbie Land, Allan is a character all on his own. Portrayed by Michael Cera in the film, Allan is the lovable, shy guy next door who may or may not have a crush on Ken.
  • Weird Barbie is the Barbie doll you played a little too rough with as a kid. Played by Kate McKinnon in the movie, this variant of Barbie has wacky hair, marker-stained skin, and a goofy outfit. Even though she may look a little different, Weird Barbie still shares the same endearing qualities as Stereotypical Barbie.
  • Mermaid Barbie is Barbie’s friend of the sea. In the film, Dua Lipa plays this Barbie Land character with bright blue hair and a sparkly blue tail. Mermaid Barbie is always down to party, especially if Mermaid Ken (played by John Cena) is in town.
  • President Barbie is the leader of Barbie Land. Portrayed by Issa Rae in the film, this Barbie shows that women can do anything. President Barbie is kind, confident, and dedicated.
  • Writer Barbie is the creative Barbie. Played by Alexandra Shipp in the movie, Writer Barbie is destined to be an author or journalist. She’s incredibly creative and ambitious and will stop at nothing to help her friends.
  • Doctor Barbie is the head doctor of Barbie Land. In the movie, Doctor Barbie (played by Hari Nef) heals Barbies and Kens. She’s intelligent, bright, and considerate, with a perfect bedside manner.
