All About The Powerpuff Girls Show
What is The Powerpuff Girls?
The Powerpuff Girls is an animated kids show on Cartoon Network; it originally ran from 1998 to 2005 and was revived in 2016. The show follows three superhero sisters (Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup) who protect the city of Townsville from a host of different villains while, at the same time, attending kindergarten and growing up with their father (or creator), Professor Utonium.
Blossom is the self-proclaimed leader of the Powerpuff Girls. She’s assertive, confident, and known for being the smartest (and most analytical) of the three girls. She can be a little bossy and egotistical at times, though she ultimately still cares about her sisters (and the city of Townsville) very much and wants the best for them. She also tends to be the most responsible and acts like the “big” sister to the other two. Blossom’s signature color is pink!
Bubbles is the sweet-natured optimist of the three Powerpuff Girls. She’s emotional, sensitive, and kind—which is why she’s sometimes underestimated or assumed to be a pushover by other characters in the show. However, Bubbles has proven many times that, while she’s certainly very sweet, she’s no pushover. She’s generally very happy and easygoing, and her best friend is her stuffed octopus, Octi. Her signature color is light blue!
Buttercup is the feisty, aggressive rebel of the Powerpuff Girls. She has the reputation of being the “toughest fighter” out of the three, and her hot temper can get the better of her sometimes; she absolutely hates admitting defeat under any circumstances. Although she has a tough exterior, Buttercup still has a soft side; she’s extremely protective of her sisters and has a strong sense of loyalty. Buttercup’s signature color is green!
Fun Facts:
- The Powerpuff Girls was originally called “Whoopa** Stew: A Sticky Situation.” In the show, Professor Utonium accidentally creates the girls using a substance called “Chemical X,” but originally, they were supposed to be made with a “can of whoopa**.” Cartoon Network made creator Craig McCracken change the series' name, and thus “The Powerpuff Girls” were born.
- Mojo Jojo is based on a character from the Japanese series Spectreman. Mojo Jojo is one of the most famous recurring villains in The Powerpuff Girls. He’s a super-intelligent ape—and, as it turns out, that’s because he’s inspired by Dr. Gori, an ape-like mad scientist who tried to wipe out humanity in Spectreman, only to be stopped by the hero himself.
- The Powerpuff Girls’ large, iconic eyes were inspired by American artist Margaret Keane and her artistic style. Margaret Keane (and her art) were also the inspiration behind the 2014 movie Big Eyes.
- HIM, another of the show’s iconic villains, wasn’t always called that. Originally, HIM was actually called “The Devil.” However, after concerned parents began complaining to Cartoon Network, the villain’s name was permanently changed.
- Each of the Powerpuff Girls has a unique superpower (on top of the many other abilities they all share). Blossom has ice breath, Bubbles can create supersonic waves with her voice (and she’s multilingual), while Buttercup is the only one able to curl her tongue—which she’s actually quite happy about!
