Gary the Snail. Gary is SpongeBob’s pet sea snail who only speaks by meowing (like a cat), but SpongeBob can understand him. Furthermore, despite his limited vocabulary, Gary is shown to be intelligent and level-headed, often the voice of reason who solves SpongeBob’s problems.
Patrick Starr. Patrick is SpongeBob’s simple-minded best friend. As a pink starfish, Patrick lives underneath a boulder. He’s most often unemployed, but tends to hold short-term jobs throughout the course of the show and spends most of his time goofing around with SpongeBob.
Sandy Cheeks. Sandy is a flying squirrel from Texas. She lives in a waterproof dome and walks around in a diving suit when out in Bikini Bottom, and she’s one of SpongeBob and Patrick’s good friends. A scientist, explorer, and inventor, Sandy takes pride in her capabilities and “Texas tough” persona.
Squidward Tentacles. Squidward is SpongeBob’s neighbor, although the two don’t always get along. Squidward is dry, sarcastic, and artistic. He plays the clarinet and paints, though his talents are rarely recognized, and he tends to get frustrated with SpongeBob’s shenanigans.
Mr. Krabs. Mr. Krabs is SpongeBob’s boss and the owner of the Krusty Krab. Obsessed with money, Mr. Krabs is known for his greediness and cunning, though he also cares a great deal for his daughter (Pearl) and his employees (including SpongeBob) to an extent.
Pearl Krabs. Pearl is Mr. Krabs’s teenage daughter. She often tries hard to fit in, though she struggles because she’s a sperm whale. She’s smart and will inherit the Krusty Krab when she’s older, but for the moment, she works at the Bikini Bottom Mall (and uses her father’s credit card to stay in style).
Plankton. Plankton is the owner of the Chum Bucket restaurant and Mr. Krabs’s rival. He’s always trying to discover the secret recipe for Krabby Patties so he can run the Krusty Krab out of business and take over the ocean, but in the meantime, his restaurant is pretty unsuccessful.
Karen. Karen is a supercomputer invented by Plankton. She’s married to Plankton and, being much smarter than him, is usually the mastermind behind Plankton’s schemes to try and steal the secret Krabby Patty recipe.
Mrs. Puff. Mrs. Puff is SpongeBob’s teacher at boating school (where students learn to drive boats like cars). She often gets arrested because she’s responsible for SpongeBob’s driving (and he often causes destruction when attempting to drive).
The Flying Dutchman. The Flying Dutchman is a grumpy pirate ghost who haunts the seven seas and collects souls. He lives in a cavern that contains Davy Jones’s locker.
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are an elderly superhero duo who live in a nursing home together. They’re the stars of SpongeBob’s favorite TV show.
King Neptune. King Neptune is a powerful merman who rules the seas from his palace in Atlantis. He’s typically depicted as selfish and arrogant; in the show, he has a wife and son, though in the SpongeBob movie, he has a daughter instead.
Larry the Lobster. Larry the Lobster is a lifeguard at the Goo Lagoon and a bodybuilder obsessed with weightlifting.
Harold and Margaret SquarePants. Harold and Margaret are SpongeBob’s parents. They love him, though they’re embarrassed that he doesn’t have a driver’s license yet.
